Today was Nane Nane ("eight eight") or Farmers Day in Tanzania. It's a public holiday much similar to a U.S. county fair, complete with meat on a stick, fresh produce, and cattle on display.
This year we shared Nane Nane our friend, Kate, who is visiting us from New York City. We graduated from Wartburg together where she and Allison were both music education majors.
We started off our day with a Tanzanian favorite, chips mayai (fried potatoes with an egg cracked on top). Local music blasted as 30+ vendors sold exactly the same foods, but it seemed to be working.
After eating, we set out to see what Nane Nane had in store for us this year. As always there were lots of people slowly moving through the streets and aisles between the stands.
Along the way we saw food vendors, fabric shops, farming products, second-hand clothing auctions, radios and cell phones, and housewares. We stopped for some neon pink “ice cream” which was much more sugary ice than cream, but it cooled us off. The best part of the day was finding ngoma-- some new drums.
